Many of Jehovah’s Witnesses (as I, myself) have been given “apostate†books to read when we first started associating with JWs. It was easy to detect those ‘apostates’ were merely “belly-aching†about mostly personal problems they had with JWs, perhaps even legitimately so. Or they would gripe about the founding people long dead - Russel, Rutherford and/or others. What religion is there that has founders/members that can’t be faulted? Even Jesus was faulted by religious nay-sayers to the point of deadly execution. Or, one may say “I believe the Bible says/means this and YOU don’t, thus YOU’RE the one that’s wrong.†Strange how most quitting JWs readily and reasonably defended what they knew was true as a way of life, and then when experiencing a personal problem, everything they once reasoned as “truth†now becomes incorrect! When reading near all anti-Witness books you can easily sense a negative and begrudging attitude from the writer. Enter; George D. Chryssides’ “Jehovah’s Witnesses Continuity and Change.†He presents a well-rounded picture of both the good and bad of JWs, the Watchtower Society and adds more-so to the partially told, bias accounts the anti-witness literature alleges. No need for Witnesses to fear reading what Chryssides writes. It is far from the condescending perspective of what we are faced with otherwise. Look at the “dirt†that is recorded in the Bible by devoted servants of God back then. But like those in the Bible, Jehovah’s Witnesses and the Watchtower Society have demonstrated they can and do overcome human imperfection and problems with God’s help and Spirit. They are a very forward and advancing people bringing praise to God and his kingdom worldwide as no one else can come close to matching.Chryssides presents lots of the history, changing and advancing of JW beliefs as biblical knowledge is studied deeper and continuously tested. Written with respectful, informative ease of reading, Chryssides certainly did his homework to write this book. It doesn’t hurt to know the true, accurate accounts we often hear partially or biased from anti-witness people. Chryssides writes of these and more in a way that doesn’t cause doubts or discouragement at all. If anything we see an ever advancing organization overcoming anything the devil throws at God’s people. Praise Jah!Minus one star, though, because of the ridiculously high price.
George Chryssides has written an up to date survey about the beliefs and practices of Jehovah's Witnesses. Chryssides is not a Witness nor is he sympathetic to their beliefs. He belongs to another “Christian†religion. But what he does as an academic is to try and promote understanding about religion especially about what he calls New Religious Movements. Chryssides hopes to do this by accurately describing what other religions are about. He does a good job in this survey about Jehovah's Witnesses. Of course being an 'outsider' there are a few things he doesn't get quite right but on the whole he did quite well. (Google: Chryssides insider outsider podcast)A summary of what the book covers is given in the Introduction:“Unlike the majority of popular writings on the Jehovah's Witnesses, this study does not aim to criticise the organisation, but to attempt to understand its origins and development in an empathetic – which is not the same as sympathetic – manner. Those who want to find criticisms of the Watch Tower Society's teaching and practices can readily find these elsewhere. The background to the research and methodological issues are discussed in the opening chapter [Researching Jehovah's Witnesses], after which Chapter 2 [Origins] endeavours to explore the background of its founder-leader, principally in the Second Adventist tradition. Chapter 3 [Charles Taze Russell] provides a profile of Charles Taze Russell, and how the organisation he started distanced itself from Adventism, displaying distinctive features that made it stand out from other Adventist groups. … Chapter 4 [The Rutherford Era] discusses how Russell's successor Joseph Franklin Rutherford brought the organisation from being a loose federation of 'ecclesias' to a unified establisment. … Chapter 5 [Opposition] explores how the Society fared in [the] war years, and particularly how the Bible Students stood against Hitler and the Nazi regime. Chaper 6 [Organisation] explores further organisational developments and innovations under the leadership of Nathan H. Knorr, the third president, and how the Jehovah's Witnesses became better trained for their 'publishing' work. … Chapter 7 [The Bible] discusses the Society's methods of biblical interpretation, and the translation work that resulted in the organisation's New World Translation. Most, if not all, religious organisastions involve two important aspects: how to live one's life, and how to worship and perform rites of passage; hence Chapters 8 [Ethics and Lifestyle] and 9 [Worship and Rites of Passage] deal respectively with these two themes. Religions also typically promise important goals, and hence Chapter 10 [Prophecy] deals with prophetic expectations, and the Society's views on biblical chronology which underlie these –themes on which there is much popular misunderstanding. Finally, the last chapter [Problems and Prospects] examines a number of outstanding problems facing the Jehovah's Witnesses today, and how they perceive their future and the future of the world in the light of their understanding of scripture.†- Page 1, paragraph 2.The book also has the features that one would expect in an academic publication: footnotes, a small glossary, bibliography, index and a few black and white photographs and charts.Even though Chryssides is an 'outsider' to Jehovah's Witnesses he made a concerted effort to give an accurate and fair representative about who the Witnesses are. Thus, this is the best non-partisan survey of the beliefs and practices of Jehovah's Witnesses currently available.Being that it is a survey about how Jehovah's Witnesses came to be what they are today its history is limited to what is necessary to achieve that particular purpose. For a detailed scholarly history of the the Watch Tower's early years see: A Separate Identity: Organizational Identity Among Readers of Zion's Watch Tower: 1870-1887 by Schulz and de Vienne.
