Review
In review of "The Pet Professional's Guide to Pet Loss" Our business interacts every day with pet professionals across several states. One of the things I notice often amongst the pet professionals we serve is a sense of "weariness" surrounding the loss of yet another client's pet. Coming from a background as a human funeral directorI have come to realize the grief that pet professionals deal with on a regular basis and often far more frequently than human death care professionals. Wendy's book provides practical and actionable suggestions to avoid or lessen the impact on pet professionals who deal with the death of pets on a regular basis. Through understanding the importance of recognizing the signs of compassion fatigue and burnout pet professionals are better able to help themselves and in turn their clients. I highly recommend "The Pet Professional's Guide to Pet Loss" for anyone who wishes to consistently care for client families in a professional and empathetic manner, while understanding this is not possible unless they take care of themselves first.  ThomasE. This is a very good book for professionals in all areas of work. Pet loss is a very sensitive subject and the author approaches the topic exceptionally well. The author has obviously worked with a large number of individuals experiencing loss and knows how to approach it.There are things in this book I disagree with slightly from a religious view point, but the author knows her stuff.I would encourage you to read this book if you deal with any kind of pet loss on a consistent basis because it will prove extremely helpful. The book covers myths, the power of honesty, the fact that grief can change, the importance of listening and really much more.I have worked with livestock all my life and I understand loss extremely well and I probably deal with it much differently than most people. I tend to be insensitive even though I have dealt with it myself before and I am thankful for the advice on how to deal with other people especially.I love that this book includes real life examples of people working with clients from all sorts of different pet professions. For me it was a very interesting book with good advice.
Most people shy away from the topic of grief. We want to hold on to those memories of days at the dog park, hikes in the mountains, car rides to never never land without a moments thought given to "the end." It's a hard topic as a pet owner, and for those in the veterinary field, it's even harder. These professionals have to deal with grief on a day to day basis and where do they turn when they are weighed down by the pain and suffering of their clients? This book touches on not only burn out, but counseling for clients and finding a place of peace surrounding a topic not widely discussed. This is a brilliant resource for veterinary professionals of any kind and even for owners wanting to understand how to better deal with their own loss.
The author truly is an expert in her field, if not 'the only' expert in her field. The love and care she has for animals and people jumps at you from the pages. What I find invaluable in this book is the way the topic of death is approached and dealt with. For any health professional who prefers not to deal with these issues, this is the book for you. I've never come across anyone who has a handle on death, dying and the issue of grief, as much as the author does. She makes it manageable and palatable and helps you with resources and support so that you can provide the best possible service and receive help and assistance yourself as well. A fabulous book, and a-must-have for any veterinarian and other professionals who work with people and their pets.
Wendy does it again with her insightful advice on how to handle grief. I may not be a vet but i feel that all professionals should have a copy of this book. The chapter on how to handle breaking the bad news about a beloved family pet struck home for me. I still remember the awful moment of when I had to make the decision to put my dear sweet 17yr old dog down due to unfortunate circumstances. The vet that dealt with the euthanisian was a wreck by the end of it. He did not say the usual phrases but listened to what I had to say when I cried about losing my dog. Reading that chapter on loss made me realize that I had said those hurtful things in hopes to make everyone feel better, even the vet. I will keep in mind of Wendy's wisdom so that I will remember to avoid saying the non chalant comment that cause more harm than good. I am going get a copy of this book for my vet so that they will better equipped when faced with grief.
This really is an important part of your life, because your pets will pass away. Yet, most of us really never come to terms with grief. I can still remember when my goldfish died as a boy, my mother flushed it down the toilet. Two great lifetime friends in golden retrievers later, and this authors work is critical. This guide teaches:- the 7 stages of grief- myths about grief- dealing with past losses- taking care of yourself- dealing with thoughts of your own mortality- and how to get helpMs. Van De Poll is the national expert in this area. Bravo!
"...grief is a subject deserving of attention, and you, as a pet care professional, have a responsibility to your clients—and to yourself—to have a foundational knowledge of this issue." -from the book.In my work as a Guide/ Energy Worker I often help people process grief. I am not a Pet Professional, yet, this book is extremely relevant to what I do as I work with clients who have pets and those who work with them. This book is extremely comprehensive and well written with compassion and dirrection. Author Wendy Van de Poll has gone above and beyond to compile a resource that will benefit others for years to come!
This is a must-read for pet professionals and pet lovers. The author approaches the subject of pet loss with a unique passion that really shows she loves animals and cares deeply for the people who experience the loss of pets. Wendy lays out the emotions that professionals experience when dealing with pet loss and helping pet owners cope with the pain. The book is clear, concise and written with authority that proves the author has certainly gained experience in the field by helping others. The Pet professionals Guide was written exclusively for Pet Professionals but pet owners and people who are going through pet loss will certainly gain a deep sense of understanding hwo to g¥deal with grief by reading this book.
I am not a pet professional, but as a personal trainer I work with people on one on one. Lots of my clients have worked with me for years. I know them, I know their families and their pets. I know what they are going through in their lives. Now I can help them more using the knowledge from Wendy's book if they lose a pet. I have read all her previous books. She does not this appoint. Her love, caring and knowledge shines through the pages. She gives great information and tools to professionals to help their clients through their grief. I especially liked the Quick Reference Tips at the end of each chapter. Definitely recommending it to read.
