The Faraway Castle series is for anyone looking for sweet, clean, and lighthearted fairytale romance! We have here retellings of Cinderella, The Little Mermaid, and Sleeping Beauty-- each well-written and whole on its own. The characters are wonderfully done, and the plot is, thankfully, empty of clichés and tropes you would find in many other romance novels. All in all, fantastically done, Ms. Stengl! :))))
These stories are super great! I love the fun, imaginative, magical world Stengl devises. I’m a sucker for interconnected fairy tales so I was intrigued at the start. She does a great job weaving together the stories in such a new environment. There were plenty of nods to the original tales, but enough new that it really wasn’t old hat. I really appreciated the character development and relationships.
I loved reading these fairytale retellings. They have a nice combination of uniqueness and the familiar storylines in the originals. I can't even say which is my favorite because I loved them all. I hope to see many more books in this series.
I cannot possibly recommend the Faraway Castle series enough! It has the perfect blend of romance, fantasy, and originality! The tone is always light, so it's just the right amount of fairy tale fun to brighten up your day.Ellie and the Prince - Ellie and the Prince, the first official novel in the Faraway Castle series, tells the story of Ellie Calmer, who was selected to help keep the magical creatures at Faraway Castle under control thanks to her supernatural abilities to calm others with the sound of her voice. Her specialty in this role, as introduced in the prequel, Cindere Ellie, is trapping "cinder sprites," small rodent-like beings that burst into flames when they are scared or intimidated. As a magical animal rights activist of sorts, Ellie invents a spray that puts out the creatures' fires while still allowing them to stay alive. She contains the cinder sprites in small glass capsules to make sure they can't harm anyone with their fiery mischief so the guests at Faraway Castle remain happy during their stay. The castle itself is more of a vacation resort for royalty than an actual royal castle. As an employee there, Ellie sees guests come and go and makes sure that the magical beings that only she and a small handful of other people can see don't disturb anyone.The Siren and the Scholar - The Siren and the Scholar takes place six years after the events of The Little Siren. It is inspired by "The Little Mermaid," and it's my favorite adaptation of the classic Hans Christian Andersen tale that I've read so far. The book catches up with Kamoana and Tor, the titular siren and scholar that were introduced in The Little Siren. Just like the mermaid from the fairy tale, Kamoana becomes human to find Tor again. However, instead of giving up her voice, she gives up her memories of him, so she must find him without even know who she's looking for. His memories of her are wiped as well, causing a lot of frustration on his behalf as an intellectual.The Rose and the Briar - This "Sleeping Beauty" adaptation is the third book from Faraway Castle with a few subtle nods to Ellie and the Prince, the first book in the series. It tells the story of Rosa, a young lady with the ability to control plants who is burdened with the task of caring for Zafira, a sleeping princess with dangerous latent powers. Zafira reminded me of the title character from the 2016 horror movie The Curse of Sleeping Beauty, which also featured a powerful Sleeping Beauty character that turned out to be best left asleep! However, this book had a much better protagonist and a far more interesting story. Rosa's unique abilities were a pleasure to explore. They were reminiscent of Poison Ivy from Batman. The love story in the book was also clever and sweet.
I can't speak highly enough of this series. I read each one as they were published and enjoyed them all. They are sweet, clean reads with romance, magic, and excitement laced throughout. JM Stengl is clever in the design of her mystical creatures, even giving them their own personalities. Her world is set in modern day with a magical spin. I highly recommend this series ;D
This series has stolen my heart. I love the light, fluffy reads! They always have a fun, upbeat, and adventurous feel that leaves me smiling when I finish. They're creative twists on classic tales and I eagerly await the fourth! J. M. Stengl has definitely earned her spot on my shelves!
I love this series! Each book is enchanting and I really enjoy how you get to know different characters better in each story. How neat that all three are available as a box set! I can't wait for the next book to come out. Highly recommend for readers who love clean fairytale retellings.
I read these three stories separately. Before I started the first book, I wasn't too sure about it, but I gave it a try and began reading. I was soon hooked! I have greatly enjoyed these stories. I also highy appreciate that there is no foul language and no sex scenes. Love it!
