About the Author
Bill Eddy is a lawyer, therapist, mediator and the President of High Conflict Institute. He developed the "High Conflict Personality" theory (HCP Theory) and has become an international expert on managing disputes involving high conflict personalities and personality disorders. He provides training on this subject to legal, business, law enforcement, mental health, and other professionals. He has been a speaker and trainer in the U.S., Canada, France, Switzerland, and Sweden.As an attorney, Bill is a Certified Family Law Specialist in California and the Senior Family Mediator at the National Conflict Resolution Center in San Diego. Prior to becoming an attorney in 1992, he was a Licensed Clinical Social worker with twelve years’ experience providing therapy to children, adults, couples and families in psychiatric hospitals and outpatient clinics. He has taught Negotiation and Mediation at the University of San Diego School of Law for six years and he is on the part-time faculty of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine University School of Law and the National Judicial College. He is a frequent lecturer at Monash University in Australia.

I love everything that Bill Eddy has written on high conflict people. With his background as both a counselor and an attorney, he has valuable insight for anyone dealing with a high conflict person. This book is written for both the legal professional and the lay person and he spans that gap well. He gives lists of the various kinds of personality disorders so you can tell one from the other, and lists the particular problems each personality disorder causes for others both in a personal relationship and in the courts. If you are in any kind of legal process against a high conflict person, read this book. If you are going through a divorce with one, also read his book "Splitting".
Few things are worse in life than when a loving relationship comes to an end in ways that you cannot understand, negotiate, or peacefully resolve, simply because you don't know what is happening or what your next move should be to save the situation. The book has helped me in my practice of working with families with kids during divorce. I have found out first hand that insight-oriented therapy doesn't work with a high conflict person. I like Billy Eddy's approach to helping families be able to work together.
This book provided great advice , insight and effective strategies for me in a most challenging time of my life.Some things that really stand out as helpful:* treat the person as you would any other professional client*don't argue or get upset, focus on what to do next*be modest and matter of factual*avoid direct criticism of BPs, strong anger, ignoring them, or abruptly terminating relationships with them* give NPs positive feedback and admiration*stroke NPs egos*it may be most effective to suggest counseling "for dealing with the stress" of the dispute
This is a very helpful in recognizing the personality types that usually end up in legal disputes. Incredible how the traits that have been explained in the book applies to the people you know.
Recommended by attorney friend who specializes in family law and working out differences between people in conflict. I have not read it yet but am planning to do so soon.
