The book unfolds slowly using a matter-of-fact tone. It is an account of a young man, Tariq, who went from Norway to undertake jihad in Syria. The story is represented as the answers Tariq provides to the questions of an interviewer who meets the jihadist in prison after his return to Norway. The personality of the young man is not immediately credible, but the reflective way in which he tells his story becomes more and more powerful in effect as the book continues. The confusion in his thinking about the issues of life and spiritual meaning, as well as about the conflict into which he is drawn, is well drawn and convincing.

This is not an easy book to read. It is about a Muslim man, born in Norway, who leaves to go to Syria to become a jihadist. He is not an easy person to empathize with. That is why we should read it. Spoiler: it is based on real life events.

A good read that seems very plausible. Is insightful and entertaining. Shows the need for understanding, love and acceptance over hate.

This Life or the Next is the the story of a troubled young Norwegian man named Tariq Khan. The son of Pakistani immigrants, he decides to become Mujahideen in the fight against Assad in Syria. It examines themes of Islamaphobia, ostracization, and the drift from idealism into radicalism.Initially, I thought I might end up DNFing this one. There was something off-putting about the writing style. However, at around 40 pages, I connected with the rhythm of the book and genuinely felt drawn into the story. Demian Vitanza manages to provide perspective without justification—a feat all the more impressive for him having written the book in first person.I strongly recommend this for anyone who has every wondered at the mindset of seemingly ordinary young Muslim men who leave secure nations to join extremist groups in war-torn countries.I received a complimentary copy of this book via a Goodreads giveaway. Many thanks to all involved in providing me with this opportunity.

As intense as his book is, you cannot help but empathize with Tariq. He's an outsider even before he can speak himself into existence and the challenges he faces are nothing compared to the consequences he faces. It's well written and there's this brutal honesty that oozes from Tariq. Thanks NetGalley for the eARC.

It took me a few chapters to get into the book. I am still not sure how I feel about the interview format where the interviewers questions are not written.I do think it’s from a viewpoint that is rarely discussed which makes it worth the read. The entire time I kept thinking and hoping he’d make the right decision. He doesn’t seem to, except in the end. But anyone who has been young and full of passion for anything can identify with his feelings. Although, I kept wishing he’d focus his passions on something other than religion. He’s almost there in the end and I finished the book believing he’d eventually make it there.
