Amazon.com Review
"I stink!" How can you not love such swagger and candor? And Kate and Jim McMullan's big-eyed, loudmouthed garbage truck really must stink--by its own admission, and given all those smelly bags it's been cramming into its huge back hopper. Most kids already love garbage trucks on general principle, and one assumes that can only go double for a sass-mouthed, animated dumper like this one, out on its early-morning rounds: "See those bags? I SMELL BREAKFAST! Crew? Get me to the curb! Lights? Blink! Brakes? Squeal! Tail gate? SAY AH!" The many opportunities for loud, large-type sound effects should make for spirited readings, and a recipe for "alphabet soup" lets young readers practice their letters, working through the ABCs from apple cores to zipped-up ziti with zucchini. The text to I Stink!, while fun, is nowhere near as clever as the art. But fortunately Jim McMullan's fun, fat drawings and type treatments more than make up the difference, loading Dumpsters full of personality into this grimacing, grinning, growling--even burping!--big rig. Kids will have a good time doing diesel-powered imitations, but even more importantly, they'll learn where they'd be without their neighborhood trash truck: on top of "Mount Trash-o-rama, baby." From Publishers Weekly
A rowdy, ravenous New York City garbage truck is the unlikely and thoroughly engaging narrator of this comical collaboration by the creators of Hey Pipsqueak! and Nutcracker Noel. "Know what I do at night while you're asleep?" asks the brazen vehicle, "Eat your TRASH, that's what." The perspective then shifts so that readers look outside from within the truck's tail end, as garbage bags hurl through the air and land inside its "hopper." As the truck rolls around town, ingesting garbage, he saucily asks, "Did I wake you? Too bad!" Jim McMullan's whimsically exaggerated art humorously reflects the personality of this hero, whose windshield serves as bulging eyes and whose bumper becomes an enormous set of teeth. As the trash inside his belly gets compacted, a full spread records his loud "BURRRP!" (indicated in large red typeface that stretches across the gutter). The truck contentedly ("Ahhhhhh!") announces that he now has room for "alphabet soup," and presents a gratifyingly gross ABC of items that he devours: from "apple cores" to "dirty diapers,... fish heads,... kitty litter,... puppy poo,... ugly underpants..." and "zipped-up ziti with zucchini." He freely admits to his stench, then reminds readers, "Go on, hold your nose, but think about it Without me? You're on Mount Trash-o-rama, baby," as only skyscraper tops (including the Chrysler Building) clear the pictured mound of refuse. After the fellow unloads his contents on a river barge (with a "PLOP!"), he heads back to the garage ("See you tomorrow night, guys"), while kids will eagerly return to the beginning of this hilarious homage to an unsung hero. Ages 4-8. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

My son loves this book. He asks me to read it to him often. I actually enjoy it too because it's pretty funny. There's a bit of gross-out humor here but I like that kind of thing. Yeah you'll have to say "poop" when you read this book. If that's a problem for you, look elsewhere. However, if you can say "poop" and perhaps even laugh along with your kid about it, this book might be a great choice. FYI there is a TV show which features this character and his counterpart "Dirty" the shovel truck. If your kid likes the show (mine does), she or he will probably love this book all the more. In summation: great memories may be waiting for you with this funny book if you don't have a problem with saying "poop." "Poop." See? Not so bad.
I hate reading this book, I mean seriously loathe it. So why 5 stars? My three year old loves everything about this book and wants to read it every night. So if you are willing to sacrifice your happiness for the sake of your child, this is the book for you.
My son is currently obsessed with trucks, particularly garbage trucks—so much so that he dressed like a Waste Management worker for Halloween. While attending a children’s event, a fellow parent mentioned this book when he saw my son’s costume and obvious love of garbage trucks. The parent went on and on about how cute the storyline was and how much his child loved it. I must say, that person was right. This is an adorable book! The illustration is lively and fits the story and main character well and the words on the pages jump to life as you read them. His is a must-buy for your garbage truck lover.
We got this book from the library and just loved it. Great to have in a board book version since my boys still tend to tear up the paper books :(. Definitely a must have for boys that love vehicles and gross things - our favorite part is the "alphabet soup" - hilarious and great for teaching letters, too. The illustrations are great, especially of all the trash - so funny. Definitely a favorite book at our house!
My two year old son loves this book. It is a bed time favorite. It is fun and amusing and keeps him engaged despite being a little longer than some other board books. It lists the entire alphabet and gives "trash" items that start with each letter. Some of which are grossly amusing, such as "Puppy poo"!Great book for any truck loving toddler.
My first review was not so good but I had to eat my words and come back to give 5 stars because the 3 yr old that I gave the book to has become a huge fan of the book.Especially, I am told, all the descriptive words used to describe pieces of garbage. They have them memorized!
I picked up this book in our local library and my son wouldn't let me put it down!We bought it for him for his birthday and he really does think its brilliant. His favourite page is the Garbage Lorry burping...when my husband reads it to him he adds in an "Excuse Me" which makes our boy giggle. Not sure about some of the choices for the alphabet section...X is an XL T-shirt...but hey nothing is perfect! All children will enjoy this book, its really vivid and easy to read EVERY night too!
my 5 year old always borrowed this from the library, so i finally just went ahead and bought it. it encourages him to "read" a book; makes one appreciate the ever under-appreciated garbage truck. paperback is never as good as hardcover, but i didn't want to pay the hardcover price.
