I have had a lifelong passion for house plants and outdoor plants. When I first moved out to California, I took a job at a Nursery where I got a crash course in plants and horticulture. Their bible for plant care back then was the Sunset Western Garden Guide, which I also keep on my bookshelf.I needed a quick refresher course on house plants when some recent species of my house plants became sick and temperamental, so I turned to Dr. D.G. Hessayon's book "The House Plant Expert." I was impressed with the layout, illustrations and concise information included in this book and found it to be very helpful. Many times we know or recognize plants by sight but don't know their botanical name, this book helps. Great book on the basics, like Cliffs Notes for plants, that helps with repotting, spotting sickness and disease, what plants are conducive to what light, shade, etc. This book is loaded with photos and tips that will turn you into an expert. If you don't have time to read a book as detailed as the Sunset Western Guide, then this book is for you.I have owned plants that have lived for long time and continue to grow. I'm a guy with a green thumb (California sun is my secret). Anyway, I can see why this book is so popular and a consistent bestseller. My home is not a castle, it's a jungle and I get lost in it.

Hands-down the best book I've ever read on keeping houseplants. I normally have to go website to website, blog to blog, and piece together bits of information to figure out what to do, but this is in one spot and it's dead simple to figure out how to take care of all your plants. I have a small library of gardening books but few pack as much info as simply as this one does into a nice-sized book.Yesterday I decided to order another four books in this series, from bulbs to vegetable gardening. I HIGHLY recommend this book for beginners.

Very comprehensive book: well-organized and loaded with a lot of helpful information. The photos and descriptions make it easy to identify a wide variety of plants. I especially like the "Secrets of Success" with info regarding temp, watering, light, humidity and even repotting and propagation tips. Knowing the special problems related to specific plants alerts me to what I need to do differently in order for my plants to thrive. Couldn't be happier.

I have had this book for MANY years and bought this for my sister. It is OLD - and I never see newer books I find preferable, even the updated versions of this one. Be sure to look at the WHOLE book, front sections before the encyclopedic plant listings, and rear sections after all that, because info & advice on understanding and caring for plants, and understanding plant-care-terminology - something I had NO clue about, such as "partial shade" and "partial sun" - (aren't they the same thing? - NO!) - appears in both places.

Wonderful information. Learned why over the years, I have lost plants. One thing I learned that I had no clue of was that many plants have a dormancy period. During this time feeding and over watering can kill them. This alone probably saved several of my plants this year. Beautiful pictures and detailed info can help you choose the right plant for your location. Page 8 has a "foolproof"chart and a visual to help with plant placement and lighting in a room.

I really got into houseplants when I was in Germany and I had a wonderful book with all kinds to tips that allowed me to turn my home into a jungle. Well that was over 20 years ago and with all the moves, my bible to growing houseplants was lost. I picked up this book based on the reviews that I read and imagine my happiness when it was actually an updated version of the book I had all those years ago. Everything that you need to know is within its covers. If there is one thing that I could change about this book would be also including the common names of plants in the descriptions. You can find them listed in the index but you might find listings for a few plants on one page so you have to read through the complete descriptions to find the plant you were looking for. If not for this fact I would be rating this book a 5.

When I worked at a nursery, this was the only houseplant book we carried, just because it is so much more helpful than any other book on the topic. While the photos and illustrations kind of feel like they're from the 70's, it doesn't change the fact that every time I open it up to try to identify a houseplant or figure out an issue with one, this book solves my problem. The drawings are clear and easy to understand, the care information is authoritative and honest (no rah-rah business - if a plant's particular or hard to grow, the author shares that), and the sections on pests or cultural problems are very easy to understand. If you have more than one or two houseplants, or if you work in a nursery and want to be able to answer questions about houseplants well, this is definitely the best book on the topic available.

In addition to the basic information you'd expect to find in similar books, this book offers helpful, very-easy-to-understand insight about lighting, temperature, humidity, soil, container types and sizes, terrariums, ongoing care (including seasonal), diagnosis of problems and their remedies, and even a few tips about decorating. Information is clear and concise, but not abbreviated. I found this book to be excellent for beginners (like myself) because it uses regular English (albeit the Queen's) and clear illustrations. The plant-by-plant photographs are large, clear, and full of color. The book was published in England so you'll notice an occassional variation in spelling, but it included all of our current houseplants and I recognised - I mean, recognized - many others as common here in Michigan.
